Course Descriptions and Course Selection



Fulbright International Studies at Trinity University (FISTU)
Course Selection

For the FISTU program you will be participating in a series of courses
  1. FISTU seminar (Time TBD)
  2. Three courses for which you will be required to do all readings and one assignment (oral or written)
  3. You will be assigned to a German course where you will be a ‘conversation partner’ with students studying the language.

Below you will see a list of courses for the week. You will attend two courses on Tuesdays and Thursdays and one course on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Please rank your course selection below. We will do our best to offer you your top choices. In some instances, you may receive your 3rd or 4th choice.

Please make your selection using this form. Course selections must be made by August 22. The earlier you send in your selection, the more likely you'll get your first choices.

This interdisciplinary course explores the historical, cultural, and political terrain of modern South Asia, a region that includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

The African Experience - Dr. Ejikeme

This course introduces students to aspects of African history and their relation to contemporary issues. The approach is interdisciplinary and incorporates visual and literary documents. Topics may include the politics of antiquity, the trans-Atlantic slave trade, the historical development of Islam, Christianization, colonization and decolonization, with particular attention to West Africa and the Ethiopian region.

Introduction to Environmental Studies - Greg Hazleton

This course analyzes the environment from three related perspectives: the natural sciences, social policy and aesthetic appreciation. The course perspectives including biology, geosciences, policy, art and ethics. In addition to lectures and laboratory work, the course uses field and site trips to investigate the real world conditions for environmental understanding and action.

The New Testament

A study of the writings that comprise the New Testament, with attention also to certain other early Christian documents not included in the New Testament. Most of the writings are read in their entirety, and they are examined with reference to their historical, cultural, religious, and literary contexts; their use as historical sources for the reconstruction of Christian origins; their role as a basis for Christian belief and practice; and their wider influence in Western and world cultures.

Literature of the Holocaust
Instructor: Dr. Victoria Aarons

This course will be structured around three varying historical and generational perspectives of the Holocaust, that period of time from 1933-1945, in which Nazis destroyed a third of the world's Jewish population. The three perspectival approaches that will direct readings and discussion will consist of the following: those writers who themselves experienced the Holocaust, who lived through the immediacy of events and their aftermath and whose first-hand accounts shape their narratives; those "second generation" Holocaust writers, children of survivors and others whose own lives were shaped by the experience of those who witnessed the Holocaust; and finally, those writers, loosely defined as North American, whose imagination of events surrounding that Holocaust frame and engender their narratives. This course will include novels, graphic narratives, short stories, poetry, and film.

A study of the important thinkers and movements at the end of the 19th century. We will focus initially on Kant before seeing how Schopenhauer and finally Nietzsche developed on the basis of the Kantian philosophy. After an extended treatment of Nietzsche, we will look at how Freud and psychoanalysis grew out of this tradition. The course will focus on issues in epistemology, the philosophy of art, the philosophy of nature, and the development of the notion of the unconscious.

This course teaches students to increase spontaneity and intuition. Students will practice generating scenes and creating hypothetical worlds without scripts or pre-planning. Using exercises drawn from theatre as well as from music, visual art, storytelling, writing, extemporaneous speaking, and dance, students will learn to develop the spontaneous aspects of creativity and to collaborate effectively with peers.

A comparative study of different political systems around the globe and the major issues faced by governments as they manage the economy, immigration, climate change, and other issues. This is the basic introductory course in comparative politics.
